The purpose of the Spatial Intelligence and Learning Center (SILC) is to understand human spatial cognition, with an emphasis on the idea that spatial knowledge and skills can be improved, and to apply the resulting knowledge to foster spatial learning, especially in STEM disciplines.
To accomplish our mission, we break it down into the following four goals:
To characterize spatial cognition.
To determine what factors improve spatial cognition.
To apply the resulting knowledge in education and training.
To develop infrastructure for dissemination and to promote spatial cognition research
and applications.
While these goals are presented here in a natural ordering, with each goal building on the previous ones, there are also other possible connections among them. For example, educational application can uncover fundamental principles or raise challenging questions concerning how spatial cognition can best be characterized or improved.
These four goals constitute SILC’s four strategic initiatives.
